Heavily wrinkled or sun damaged facial skin often requires more than skin care or chemical peels to achieve wrinkle reduction, a smoother texture and even pigmentation. Skin resurfacing procedures remove the outer layers of skin. When these layers regenerate, the underlying collagen remodels, tightening the skin and improving its texture. Lasers allow the outer layers of the skin to be removed or ablated by applying energy with very rapid pulses of laser light. The advanced Sciton Laser allows ablation with minimal heating of the skin and may be adjusted to provide an effect similar to older CO2-type lasers to reduce coarser wrinkles. Recovery times are shorter than with a CO2 laser and most patients are able to use cover make-up within 7 days.
